StumbleUpon Shutting Down After 16 Years

Before social media news feeds started serving us content based on our interests, there was StumbleUpon.

Founded in November 2001, StumbleUpon offers a simple way to detect sites on the web: create an business relationship, input some information virtually yourself, and hit the "stumble" push button to encounter a random webpage that matches your interests.

Now, subsequently xvi years of helping people explore the web, StumbleUpon is going kaput on June xxx.

"Since starting SU the number of people with internet access has grown near 10x, and mobile phones and social media have changed our lives," StumbleUpon Co-Founder Garrett Military camp wrote in a Wednesday blog post. "The number of platforms to share or host content has increased significantly, however we still need ameliorate tools to help united states of america filter through the exploding amount of content on the web, and find indicate within the noise."

News of the shutdown isn't as well much of a shock given that Camp in 2022 introduced a new content discovery platform called Mix.com. Now, Military camp says StumbleUpon accounts volition exist transitioned to Mix "over the adjacent couple months."

Existing StumbleUpon users can annals for Mix "with a few clicks," then easily import their favorites, interests, and tags.

This has been a big week for tech shutdown news. Music video service Vevo on Thursday announced plans to "stage out elements" of its platforms, including the Vevo website and mobile apps, according to Billboard.

Plus, discussion has it that Android creator Andy Rubin has put his smartphone startup Essential upwards for sale and cancelled the company's next handset.
